Iran is ready to restart nuclear discussions with the United States on condition that it is approached with "dignity" and "respect", Tehran's top diplomat has announced.

Abbas Araghchi said only diplomacy was effective, and revealed fresh requests had originated from intermediaries to resume discussions with the American leadership. He said Iran possessed no secret atomic facilities, and Iran had not yet reached a point to authorize the global atomic watchdog to access attacked atomic facilities for security reasons.

Walking a Complex Course

The foreign minister is walking a difficult course since Iran wishes not to appear to be proceeding from a situation of vulnerability, and he insisted repeatedly that Iran had come out stronger in military terms and mentally from the joint assault on its atomic facilities in June.

He was addressing at a defense forum in Tehran where he reaffirmed that Iran had "a fundamental entitlement to process nuclear material within its borders that it will always maintain" – the primary cause of the stalemate in the earlier negotiations.

Iran's diplomats said they felt they had achieved a "magic solution" to the nuclear fuel concern in prior discussions, when it was decided an local partnership with Washington's engagement could refine atomic fuel. Both sides would have been able to declare success since home-based processing would have remained and the US could be confident that Iran's enrichment initiative was exclusively peaceful.
